Text Box: About Florida
Florida, Gauteng is a location in South Africa. It is located about 10 miles west of Johannesburg. The area which is referred to as Florida was originally established as the farm Vogelstruisfontein. Vogelstruisfontein and the farms Roodepoort and Paardekraal were established as mining camps after the discovery of gold in 1881. The main road through Florida, Goldman Street, forms the spine for local business activity and civic services. The local library is one of the best facilities of its kind in Johannesburg.[citation needed] The eastern end of Goldman street is home to a number of antique dealers specialising in Afrikana furniture.
Florida Lake is a large area of water south of the railway line. It is flanked by residential properties to the north, and parklands to the east and west. Visitors to Florida Lake can see a bronze monument by Dale Lace commemorating the discovery of gold in the area, and the lake is also a wonderful spot for picnicking and enjoying the fresh air and its local duck inhabitants especially interesting to watch as they waddle around.
Although Florida was declared as a white area during apartheid, more than half of Florida's residents today are coloured. This is mainly due to the fact that it is in close proximity to the coloured townships of Bosmont, Coronationville, Newclare, Westbury and Riverlea.
Text Box: Johannesburg Weather
Due to the height of 1753 m above sea-level, the climate in Johannesburg and on the Highveld is temperate throughout the year. The favourable climate is one of Johannesburgs main attractions. Many local residents, who enjoy annual holidays at the coast, would never consider living in hot, humid Durban or cold, wet Cape Town year round. In summer, the days are not too hot and the nights pleasantly cool. In winter, the nights can be quite cold; even below zero, but during the day the sun shines and lets the temperatures rise up to 25 degrees. Rainfall is to be expected only in summer from October to March. Otherwise the dry climate of the African interior high-plateau, the Highveld, is dominant. Johannesburg gets an annual average of between eight and ten hours of sunshine per day. The weather only gets nasty in Johannesburg when the strong winds of August blow over the Highveld and the loose sands of the mine-dumps whirl through the air and cover the city in a yellow haze of dust
